In short

Coralpoint Commercial Capital, a small-business funding service in Titusville, FL, looks at how consulting and engineering firms in Brevard County, FL fund payroll between milestone invoices. The post covers the size of the gap, when a business loan for consulting work fits, when a line of credit is better, and what partners ask to see.

Two very different kinds of firm

Brevard County, FL counted 477 management, scientific and technical consulting firms with employees in 2023, and 89.1% of them had fewer than five employees. It counted 368 architectural and engineering firms, which together employed 9,967 people, about 27 per firm by our arithmetic (County Business Patterns 2023). Another 2,477 consultants worked with no payroll at all in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024).

By those counts, consulting firms with payroll skew very small, while the architectural and engineering firms average about 27 employees. Both can share the same timing problem.

Why milestone billing leaves a hole in the account

A firm that bills by milestone does the work first, invoices at the milestone, then waits for the client's payment terms. Salaries, software subscriptions, insurance and rent are paid throughout. With a 60-day milestone and 30-day payment terms, a firm can carry three months of payroll for a project before the first dollar arrives.

A new contract makes it worse, not better: hiring for it adds salaries immediately while revenue arrives later.

Sizing the gap: a worked example

Hypothetical figures only: a six-person engineering practice takes a contract that needs two more staff costing $13,100 a month together. The first milestone is billed after 60 days and paid 30 days later. Before that payment, about $39,300 in added salaries has gone out. That figure, plus a margin for slippage, is the size of the gap to fund. It is not an offer or a typical amount.

Business loan for consulting work, or a line of credit?

A business consultant loan, meaning a working capital loan, suits one defined gap: a single contract with a clear first payment date. You borrow once and pay it back on a fixed schedule.

A business line of credit suits gaps that repeat with every project. You draw when salaries run ahead of collections and repay when invoices clear, so you pay for the money only while it is out.

Payroll on a revolving line: is that allowed?

Yes. A line of credit can cover payroll gaps. What partners look for is evidence that collections eventually catch up: receivables aging, signed contracts and a history of clients paying.

Funding the first payrolls of a young consulting or contracting outfit

New firms have less history, which narrows the options. Partners look at time in business. A new firm can strengthen a request with signed contracts, a clear billing schedule and personal financial records. Coralpoint does not quote eligibility rules, because each partner sets its own.

What partners look at for consulting and engineering firms

  • Accounts receivable aging and the client list
  • Signed contracts and their billing terms
  • A run of recent operating-account statements
  • How long the business has operated, and its yearly revenue

Questions Owners Ask

Call (407) 203-9976

Is a business loan for consulting different from other business loans?

Not in structure. What differs is the review: partners focus on receivables and contracts because consultants have few physical assets.

Can a one-person consulting firm in Brevard County, FL get a line of credit?

Partners review requests from very small firms. Time in business, deposits and receivables are among the things partners look at.

Should I use a business credit card for payroll instead?

Cards are built for purchases, not payroll. A line of credit moves cash into the operating account, which is where payroll is paid from.
